Where did Iconography come from?
The word Icon comes from the Greek word eikon meaning image. This word is seen used in Genesis--"God made man in His own icon", meaning his own image. Again, later in the Bible, this word is also used in Colossians when Paul describes Christ as the image, or icon, of the invisible God.
After about two centuries following Christ's death, early Christians started creating different art that was inspired by God, representing God and his divinity. At first, small paintings were created but as the years progressed and the Church grew, more different styles of art and iconography flourished.
